On behalf of the 56,000 members of the Canadian Union of Postal Workers, I am writing to demand that the Canadian government condemn the military assault on the people of Gaza that the state of Israel commenced on December 26th, 2008.
Oxford professor of international relations Avi Shlaim served in the Israeli army and has never questioned the state’s legitimacy. But its merciless assault on Gaza has led him to devastating conclusions
A very large delivery of US weaponry to Israel consisting of 3,000 tons of “ammunition” is scheduled to sail to Israel. The size and nature of the shipments are described as “unusual”.
As the number of deaths from Israel’s carnage in Gaza mounts, more and more people in Canada are being moved to take action. Of course, the question quickly becomes: “What can I do?” Among the countless petitions, creative actions, protests, media alerts, letter writing campaigns, public statements and fundraising drives, how can we make the biggest collective impact on Israeli policies as people living in Canada? How can we build a movement that respects all of our different experiences, backgrounds, perspectives and understandings and at the same time effectively responds to Palestinian calls for solidarity?
200 still behind bars after taking part in protests against their country’s military offensive in Gaza
Israel F16 fighter jets rocketed a house in the northern Gaza town of Jabaliya Tuesday afternoon, killing at least 12 members of the same family, hospital officials said.
Several untold stories still under the rubbles of Gaza devastation. The more time this war lasts the more victims fall down, their stories buried with them. Most of the Gaza Strip plunges into deep darkness since the start of this war. I find several hardships to send out this report due to power problem. Today, a rocket targeted my uncle’s house. My house got several splinters and rocket shrapnel.
John Pilger: The lying silence of those who know.
They know that the horror now raining on Gaza has little to do with Hamas or, absurdly, “Israel’s right to exist.” They know the opposite to be true: that Palestine’s right to exist was canceled 61 years ago and the expulsion and, if necessary, extinction of the indigenous people was planned and executed by the founders of Israel. They know, for example, that the infamous “Plan D” resulted in the murderous depopulation of 369 Palestinian towns and villages by the Haganah (Jewish army) and that massacre upon massacre of Palestinian civilians in such places as Deir Yassin, al-Dawayima, Eilaboun, Jish, Ramle and Lydda are referred to in official records as “ethnic cleansing.”

Media Release – January 9, 2009
Fredericton – Fredericton Palestine Solidarity is encouraging everyone to attend a rally on Saturday, January 10 at 1:00 PM at Fredericton City Hall to demand that the Canadian government call for an immediate ceasefire on Gaza and an end to the occupation of Palestine. Over 700 Palestinians, mostly civilians, have been killed and thousands more maimed and wounded since the Israeli assault began on December 27, 2008.
Canadian Foreign Minister Lawrence Cannon has blamed Hamas and rocket attacks for starting the current siege on Gaza. “To suggest Gazans are responsible for the Israeli Army firing missiles into densely populated areas of Gaza is like blaming Prophet Jesus for being crucified or blaming Jews for the Holocaust. The population of Gaza and Palestinians, in general, have been condemned, not by the Israeli Army, but by the complicity of the rest of the world. ” stated Naveed Majid, Communications Director for the Fredericton Islamic Association (FIA) and Regional Director of the Canadian Islamic Congress.
According to Richard Falk, United Nations Special Rapporteur on Human Rights in the Palestinian Territories, there was no substantial rocket fire from Gaza during the truce until Israel launched an attack last November 4th directed at what it claimed were Palestinian militants in Gaza, killing several Palestinians. It is widely speculated that the attacks on Gaza have been motivated by Israel’s upcoming election.
Majid added, “Every one of us is responsible for failing to make Israel understand that lasting peace is not simply the absence of violence by Palestinians towards Israel, but the presence of justice by Israel towards Palestinians.”
On numerous public occasions Hamas has called for extending the truce. But its calls have been ignored by Israel. The humanitarian crisis in Gaza worsens everyday. International agencies, including the United Nations, have condemned the blockade that has severely limited necessities of life such as medical supplies and food.
The Harper government has shamefully supported Israel’s collective punishment of the 1.5 million people of Gaza. Canada was the first government to end humanitarian aid to the Palestinians after the election of Hamas. Since the Israeli bombing began twelve days ago, more than 80 per cent of Palestinians are without food aid and hospitals do not have the equipment or basic pain killers to deal with the thousands wounded. Universities, schools, electricity and communications centres have also been targeted for attacks. A U.N. school housing refugees was bombed two days killing over 40 people, many of whom were children.
“The current assault on Gaza is an aggressive war that violates a long list of international laws and the Geneva Convention. We must stand in solidarity with Gaza and demand that the Government of Canada call for an immediate ceasefire and the restoration of humanitarian aid,” stated Jack Gegenberg, an organizer with Fredericton Palestine Solidarity and Jews for a Just Peace Fredericton.
Saturday’s rally in Fredericton has been endorsed by Fredericton Palestine Solidarity, Fredericton Islamic Association, Jews for a Just Peace Fredericton, the Fredericton Peace Coalition, Canadian Unitarians for Social Justice N.B. Chapter, Women in Black, Students Aware of the World at Fredericton High and Strax. The Fredericton Childcare Collective will provide childcare.

The military invasion of the Gaza Strip by Israeli Forces bears a direct relation to the control and ownership of strategic offshore gas reserves. This is a war of conquest. Discovered in 2000, there are extensive gas reserves off the Gaza coastline.
